Story

The story in Go Go Town isn’t super deep, but it does provide some interesting lore and context for the game. You start out as the newly appointed mayor, shipped in rather unceremoniously in a duffel bag. Your mysterious boss gives you vague instructions via phone calls, and you learn the ropes from a crew that looks like they stepped out of central casting for a secret service agency.

There are also hidden files scattered around the game that hint at a larger conspiracy, but you can easily miss them if you’re not actively searching. Overall, the story is lighthearted and doesn’t have a major impact on the gameplay, but it will be interesting to see if it gets fleshed out more in future updates.

GAMEPLAY

This is where Go Go Town truly shines. As mayor, you’ll be responsible for everything from building houses and shops to managing resources and keeping your residents happy. There are four resource zones to explore: industry, forestry, farming, and fishing. Each zone provides different materials that you’ll need to construct buildings and stock your shops.

Speaking of shops, there’s a wide variety to choose from, each with its own unique requirements. You’ll need to make sure you have the resources to stock them and the residents to staff them. Attracting residents takes some work, as they each have specific needs that you’ll need to fulfill. Once they’ve agreed to join your town, you’ll need to provide them with housing before they can start working.

The building mode is robust, allowing you to place a variety of buildings and decorations, and eventerraform the landscape to your liking. However, there are limitations on how many of each item you can build initially, though you can unlock more options later in the game.

Your town’s progression is tied to a tech tree that you unlock with eco points earned by keeping your visitors happy. There are currently nine tiers to unlock, each with its own challenges and rewards. As you progress, you’ll gain access to automation options like courier services and council workers, making running your town smoother.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of Go Go Town is the variety of vehicles you can use to get around town. There are even some fun hidden vehicles to discover as you explore the world.

It’s important to note that the initial stages of the game can be a bit grindy. The day/night cycle can feel slow, and there’s no way to speed things up. However, once you get past that initial hump, there’s a ton to do, and you’ll find yourself quickly progressing through the ranks. The automation options give you a lot of control over how you run your town, and the new shops and tech you unlock encourage you to experiment and try new things.

DESIGN

Go Go Town boasts a charming and colorful art style. The characters are quirky and fun, and there are a ton of customization options to unlock as you play. The soundtrack is a perfect match for the game’s atmosphere, providing a unique soundscape that’s both chaotic and chill at the same time. Overall, the design complements the gameplay perfectly, capturing the game’s quirky and chaotic vibe.
